Do you know which of our National Parks was the most visited last year? What land mass was the first National Park in the United States? According to the National Park Service, the most visited park (per the 2004 statistics) was the Great Smoky Mountains National Park which counted over 9 million recreational visits. Surprised? Yellowstone National Park has the distinct honor of being the United State’s first National Park having been designated so in 1872.

Ever since 1916 our national park system has been overseen by the National Park Service (NPS). In addition, the NPS oversees national forests, national monuments, historic sites, recreational areas, national cemeteries, historic battlefields, national seashores, etc. It’s a daunting task to keep so many of these facilities maintained and open to the public. Unlike other programs which our tax dollars seem to benefit only a few, our national parks system is for everyone’s enjoyment and whose benefits we all can receive. To learn about the National Park Service simply visit one of the nearly 400 sites under their care or go online to www.nps.gov and read more.

If you are an RV’er, one of the best ways for your family to learn about our national park system is to visit a National Park. There are so many fun things a family can do in a National Park. Hiking, biking, fishing, sightseeing, and camping in the backwoods are just a few obvious activities. Rock climbing, whitewater rafting, or snowmobiling await the more adventurous. Whether it’s summer or winter, these National Parks offer recreation for everyone. Your kids too will enjoy learning about nature, conservation, history, and more. Don’t forget to sign them up for a Junior Ranger Program while you’re there. If you’re interested in learning more about this or other kids programs, visit the National Park Foundation’s website at www.nationalpark.org.

Whether your family likes a private RV park or prefers a campground inside a National Park, this directory has cross links to help plan your trip to one of our top National Parks. In time, other parks and campgrounds will be added so check back here often. If you’re a campground owner or host and would like to add your RV park to our list, please contact us.
